Flora Europaea the original Linnean specimen biennal, T, 2n-22, diploid mesic to mesoxeric, ruderal western Palearctic Artemisietea, Onopordetalia R87 habitats     One of the most common spiny opportunistic weeds, especially along the roads and in the heavily overgrazed pastures.
